BlackBerry OS 7.1 has been launched today by RIM today. The new software release will bring a number of new software features which will excite all you existing BlackBerry owners out there, but not so much excitement for anyone running Apple or Android devices, but differently worth a read anyway.
RIM showcased the latest iteration of its BlackBerry software OS 7.1 at CES. Probably the most interesting new feature is 'BlackBerry Tag'. This new app enables you to tap your NFC enabled BlackBerry smartphone against another to share things such as contact details, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content.
Other features of BlackBerry OS 7.1 include the ability to use your BlackBerry smartphone as a WiFi hotspot - something that has been needed for a long time now. There is also a brand-new BlackBerry Travel app. Universal Search has also been given a make-over. Lucky users of the popular BlackBerry Curve 9380 will also see the addition of an FM radio, which will give you access to your favourite local radio stations on the move.
Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion (RIM) had the following to say about the announcement:
"BlackBerry 7 delivered a next-generation platform for our customers around the world and the range of software updates announced today build upon the strengths of that platform to further enhance the mobile experience and make life easier, from managing daily tasks to planning big adventures,"
